A View from 11 Hours Ahead

Right now, I’m in a part of the world that’s 11 hours ahead of home. That time difference takes some getting used to—especially when it comes to staying in touch. There have been a few moments when I’ve sent a family text, only to realize right after that it’s 3 a.m. back home!

One thing I look forward to every evening is watching the moon rise. While the sunrise is beautiful too, there’s something peaceful about the moon slowly making its way into the sky. It reminds me that just as the day is winding down here, it’s just beginning for the people I love back home. Some are waking up to a fresh start, some are facing challenges, and others are simply hoping for a good day ahead. In that quiet moment, seeing the moon feels like a small bridge between my world and theirs.

Pause and Think

That view often prompts me to pause and think about the people in my life—what they might be walking into, what they’re carrying, and how I can support them from afar. It’s easy to focus on our own needs, especially when life gets hectic. But there’s something powerful about shifting that focus outward—thinking of others and wishing them peace, strength, and clarity as they begin their day.

Sometimes, reflection like this comes naturally, sparked by something as simple as a walk around the base or a glance at the night sky. Other times, it takes more intention. Whether you’re someone who prays, meditates, or just sets aside a moment to focus on others, these small habits can shape how we connect—not just to people, but to purpose.

Reflection Questions

  1. When was the last time you paused to intentionally think about someone else’s day and how you might encourage or support them—even from a distance?
  2. What simple daily reminder could you use to refocus your attention beyond your own routine or challenges?
